Being a new photographer with a full time teaching job makes it difficult to scout out new locations. I completely understand why people want to gatekeep their locations that they have spent HOURS looking for. However, there are some locations in the North Houston area that I love to use and want to share with my fellow beginner photographers and clients!
Choosing a location is one of the most important parts of a photo session. I like to figure out the vibe of my clients before I recommend a location because I believe that the background should match their style. I would not choose a wooded area for a couple that hates the outdoors because that isn’t them. This is really important to me and why I send you a questionnaire after booking with me!

A client actually shared this location with me which I will forever appreciate because I love this park! Rob Fleming Park has a few different areas that can be used for photos including a pavilion, a photogenic playground, a pond, and a walkway area. They even have an area for bluebonnets during bluebonnet season.
You do have to be careful, though, because people can rent out the pavilion for events, and they host events throughout the year that take up the entire park and makes it impossible to take pictures. You can look ahead on their website, though, to see if they have an event planned for the day of your session!
Check out these photos I took here. I recommend Rob Fleming Park for family, engagement, and senior sessions.
Have you been searching for the perfect creek location? Pundt Park is my go to! There is a short walk to the creek from the parking lot, and to get to the creek, there is somewhat of a steep hill so be careful taking pregnant clients.
Not only does Pundt Park have a beautiful creek, but it has a wooded area next to the creek as well as an open field along the short walk to the parking lot. Be careful during warmer months as there have been a few snakes spotted in the creek. I highly recommend bringing something to put everyone’s belongings on as the sand does get everywhere.
This is a newer location in the Magnolia area. Mod Art is an outdoor studio that also has an art gallery on location. The owners did say that an indoor studio was a plan for the future so that’s exciting! They have three spots on property that you can either rent out hourly individually or all together.
At Mod Art, you can choose between a cute barn area, a beautiful swing, or the popular A-frame. I used the swing for mommy and me minis and they were a hit!
The Woodlands Waterway is easily one of my favorite places to shoot. I love having variety in one location, and we definitely have that here! I like to start at Town Green Park since it’s an easy location to come back to, and I walk down one side and then up the other. There are plenty of little spots to take cool pictures and I really feel like you can let your creativity take over and capture some cool pictures.
Another thing I love about the Woodlands Waterway? PARKING GARAGES! We all know and love a good rooftop session and this is where I go. You usually have to pay around $6 on average to park, but not having to deal with downtown Houston makes it worth it to me.
Last but certainly not least, Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve. This is a go-to of mine for a wooded area that has other locations. I really love using this location for family sessions because even though it can sometimes get crowded with photographers, there’s so much space that is doesn’t matter. Everyone has been so respectful every time I’ve gone as well.
There are a few different spots that I always go to that I’m sure you will notice in the gallery below, but the great thing about Kickerillo is that there is a restroom in a very central location so it’s easy for outfit changes (I had one senior do three outfits and it took no time at all – LOVE THAT). Also, the trails all come back around the parking lot and restroom, so you can easily do one side of the trail, change outfits, and then do the other side of the trail.
Of course, these aren’t the only locations in North Houston that I use, but they are easily my top five. Some other outdoor locations that I like are WG Jones State Forest, Burroughs Park, downtown Tomball, and downtown Spring.
If you are looking for indoor studios in the North Houston area, I highly recommend The Muse Manor and The Creative Photographer. Both offer seasonal set ups and are my favorite studios for family, maternity and milestone sessions!
